Summary:
Terry Treetop Finds New Friends is an e-book about a boy named Terry. Terry is a boy who loved to climb trees. He love to climb trees so much that everyone called him Terry Treetop. No one bothered to call him Terry. This made Terry feel sad and lonely. One day, his father treated Terry to a treehouse on top of his favorite tree. He was so happy, he could not wait to share it with all of this friends. So Terry set out into the forest to find a friend who would join him in the tree house.
He first asked Betty the bee for help but she was busy. So he went off to Shelly the sheep who was knitting. He went and asked various animals but they were all busy and Terry was sad. With despair he set off to go home. On his way home, Kitty the cat was suck up in a tree. Terry climbed up to rescue her and everyone was happy with his bravery. He went home and they all threw a big party.
Pros:
- Nice story
- Good illustrations
- Keeps kids interested
Cons:
- Could be formatted better. As I was reading it to one of my special needs kids, the graphic was cute but the text took up two pages. That meant that one page had an adorable graphic while the other was white. I think they should format the book better or just use less text and add more graphics.
- This book is supposed to teach about friendship but it did not. The book basically stated that even when Terry was totally ignored, if he goes out of the way to save one of the friends, everyone will come and be with him. Friendship is a give and take relationship and this was greatly missing here.
Suggestions:
- There is a lot of hurt in this book. For example when Cherry the Chicken was to busy collecting eggs, ask your child what they would have done better. Use this book to talk to your child about friendship. You can encourage your child and give them some good introduction lines. For example since the chicken is obviously busy collecting eggs, why not Terry help out and when he is finished his chore they all go to his treehouse.
Age Range:
- 2+
Bottom Line:
Although I am not thrilled with this book, I am not disappointed either. I will be using this book with my special needs kids more as a what not to do, then as a what to do book. This book does have cute graphics but kids should also know the importance of friendship and Terrys friends clearly did not do what they were supposed to do. Terry should understand that everyone had responsibilities that need to be attended to while his friends need to understand that doing something for Terry should not come with a price.
